\nThis year, 12 million euros \u2013 just over 120 million kronor \u2013 will be invested in free Interrail for up to 20,000 18-year-olds in the EU.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The European Commission hopes to invest even more in the same project in the coming years.<\/p>\n

The long-term budget proposal presented on Wednesday allocates 700 million euros \u2013 more than seven billion Swedish kronor \u2013 to support interrail travel among the EU's young people between 2021 and 2028.<\/p>\n

The train ridership initiative is included in the greatly increased funding for the EU's student exchange program, Erasmus Plus, but at the same time risks being left in limbo when the EU member states begin negotiating what should or should not remain in the EU budget.<\/p>\n

The entire budget is 1,279 billion euros \u2013 over 12 trillion Swedish kronor.<\/p>\n
