{"id":232888,"date":"2019-01-10T06:58:55","date_gmt":"2019-01-10T05:58:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.travelreport.se\/?p=232888"},"modified":"2024-02-02T12:26:07","modified_gmt":"2024-02-02T12:26:07","slug":"more-people-fly-despite-increased-climate-awareness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.travelreport.se\/en\/fler-flyger-trots-okad-klimatmedvetenhe\/","title":{"rendered":"More people are flying despite increased climate awareness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.travelreport.se\/en\/2015\/06\/09\/flygplan-kan-snart-reparera-sig-sjalva-i-luften\/flygvinge_1205_2007\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-224807\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelreport.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/flygvinge_1205_2007-450x295.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"295\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-224807\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<strong>We fly like never before. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But fewer people want to brag about their travels. \u201dIt\u2019s starting to get a little embarrassing to be an obvious climate destroyer,\u201d says researcher Maria Wolrath S\u00f6derberg.<\/p>\n<p>In 2018, SAS broke a new passenger record with 30.1 million travelers \u2014 an increase of 1.2 percent compared to the previous year.<\/p>\n<p>According to Magnus Hurst, head of Investor Relations at SAS, the figures primarily reflect increased demand for leisure travel.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, Norwegian also published record figures for 2018. A total of 37.3 million passengers flew with the company \u2014 an increase of 13 percent, and it was also a record year for Finnair.<\/p>\n<p>The increase is happening at the same time as the debate about the impact of aviation emissions on the environment has become increasingly extensive.<\/p>\n<p>But despite increased awareness of aviation emissions, we continue to fly even more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dWe are quite good at making efforts that don&#039;t cost us much in sacrifice,\u201d explains Maria Wolrath S\u00f6derberg, a lecturer in rhetoric at S\u00f6dert\u00f6rn University who researches how we justify our non-actions on the climate issue.<\/p>\n<p>According to Wolrath S\u00f6derberg, most of us emit around 10-11 tons of greenhouse gases per year. To reach the Paris Agreement, we need to reduce emissions to 1.5-2 tons per person per year.<\/p>\n<p>In a pilot study, Wolrath S\u00f6derberg and her research colleague investigated how people who consider themselves environmentally conscious justify their flying. A common strategy is to claim that they compensate by living an environmentally conscious lifestyle. But that strategy doesn&#039;t work, she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201d&quot;If you travel back and forth to Southeast Asia, you&#039;ll end up with about 2.5 tons of greenhouse gases, which means you wouldn&#039;t even be able to breathe for the rest of the year. You&#039;d have to sort garbage for a couple of decades or be vegan for a couple of years to compensate for that flight.&quot;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another way to justify our actions is to claim that one&#039;s own contribution is negligible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dIt is true in itself that it does not matter much what individuals do, but it matters a lot what groups do and groups tend to influence the system,\u201d says Wolrath S\u00f6derberg.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier today, statistics were released showing that slightly more people traveled abroad from Swedish airports in 2018, but that fewer flew domestically.<\/p>\n<p>Minister of the Environment Karolina Skog (MP) sees the decrease in domestic flights and the subdued increase in international flights as a sign of increased climate awareness following the debate surrounding the introduction of the aviation tax this spring.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, she states that long-distance travel will be one of the most difficult challenges in meeting the Paris goals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201d&quot;Information plays an important role, but it will not be enough all the way.
