That several factors affect what compensation and support someone who suddenly loses their job is able to receive. Different rules apply if you are laid off or if your employer goes bankrupt, for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government has presented a model for short-time work to save jobs in the crisis. It can result in a salary reduction of at most 7.5 percent for the employee, if working hours are reduced by 60 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201d"There are employers who will have to lay off staff even with this, or who can't handle it anyway and go bankrupt," says Hel\u00e8ne Robson, chief legal officer at Sveriges Ingenj\u00f6rer, which has many members affected by the corona crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If you are covered by short-time work, she thinks you should keep track of what the employer and union have agreed on about how quickly you must report for work if working hours are extended. This is not centrally regulated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201d"We don't know what such agreements look like in a crisis situation like this. You should consider contacting your union, if you are a member, to get advice on whether everything has gone well."\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To be eligible for unemployment benefits, an unemployed person must have been a member of the unemployment fund for 12 months and have worked at least half-time for at least six of those months. The maximum compensation is 20,000 kronor per month before tax for 100 days, after which it is reduced to just under 17,000.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Many unions also have income insurance for their members. At the Swedish Engineers' Union, this means that you receive 80 percent of your salary up to 100,000 kronor per month, for a maximum of 150 days. Other unions have similar arrangements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This requires that, in addition to the unemployment fund, you have been a member of the union for 12 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But far from everyone who is now affected has been a member of either an unemployment insurance fund or a union. Those who are not entitled to income-based unemployment insurance can still receive a basic compensation, of a maximum of 8,000 kronor before tax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If you are made redundant, it is important to register with the employment service on the first day of unemployment. Otherwise, you will lose your SGI, which governs compensation when you become ill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If the company where you work goes bankrupt, the state wage guarantee kicks in for employees. There is an important time aspect here. The wage claims must not be older than three months when the bankruptcy application is filed with the court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201d"It is not entirely unusual for the employer to ask the employees to wait, they are trying to resolve it and perhaps have an order in the works. And filing for bankruptcy can feel difficult. But it is quite urgent if you do not get paid, the risk is that the claims will become too old," says Hel\u00e8ne Robson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The ceiling in the salary guarantee is just under SEK 190,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201d"It may sound like a lot, but many people hit that ceiling pretty quickly. It can also be a matter of saved vacation and other receivables."\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After bankruptcy, the state wage guarantee applies for another month, plus the notice period. If you reach the ceiling during that time, the employment contract can be terminated and you can receive unemployment insurance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201d"It may be the case that certain staff may need to continue working during the notice period, if the bankruptcy trustee assesses that all creditors benefit from completing certain things. In that case, they should have regular pay during that time."\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Privately employed civil servants who are given notice may be entitled to support from the TRR safety council, which offers personal advice and training, among other things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
To be covered, you must be permanently employed at the time of termination and have worked for at least one year at an affiliated company. This means that there must be a collective agreement at the workplace. TRR is jointly owned by the Confederation of Swedish Enterprise and the trade unions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
TRR can show good results so far. Latest figures show that 9 out of 10 people made redundant within seven months have moved on to a new job, education or started their own business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201d"We also know from previous crises that only 40-45 percent of all notices lead to layoffs. But now this is extraordinary, we don't know where this will go," says Erica Sundberg, head of TRR's national delivery, where preparations are being made for a sharp increase in laid-off civil servants who need support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201dWe are in a bit of the calm before the storm.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Over the past year, the business has increasingly shifted towards becoming digital, and she is convinced that they are well equipped to handle layoffs during the corona period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her advice to anyone who is laid off is to be proactive from the start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201d"Take the opportunity to sharpen your skills. There is so much online training. Join different networks. Out of a crisis also come new needs, and there will be a lot of short-term needs. Maybe it's not a dream job but an opportunity for a while," says Erica Sundberg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
