Lots of snow, meltwater and a coronavirus pandemic mean that this year's start to the season in the Swedish mountains will be different. This means there are a few things to consider before your summer visit to the mountains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In many places there is still a lot of snow left in the mountains, but it is melting quickly and this causes high water flows. Therefore, it can be difficult to get around during a mountain hike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2013 Walking in snow can make it easier to get around in some ways, you don't have to walk on rocky terrain, for example. But it can also be significantly slower and you get more tired walking in snow than on bare ground, so you can underestimate how long it takes and how hard it is, says Per-Olov Wikberg, coordinator at the Mountain Safety Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The snow lies all the way from the western J\u00e4mtland Mountains and north along the mountain range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2013 So with a little good will, you can even go skiing, says Per-Olov Wikberg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In addition, the corona pandemic means that summer in the mountains will be different. STF's mountain stations only accept advance bookings, so you can't make any spontaneous overnight stays. You should also think about how long the trips you choose to do, says Per-Olov Wikberg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u2013 You shouldn't underestimate the ongoing pandemic. First and foremost, you should make shorter trips, because if you get sick further out in the mountains, it will take time to get picked up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The mountain stations will open on Thursday, June 18. Fine weather is expected and Per-Olov Wikberg wants to encourage everyone who has the chance to visit the mountains to take the chance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
