But Swedish tour operators are uncertain about the winter season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In Bangkok, the world&#039;s most visited city for four years in a row, shops on the usually bustling Khao San tourist strip have closed again. And many of the paradise-like beaches that are usually filled with established bathers have been able to catch their breath for a while.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not much is the same in tourist magnet Thailand, which closed its borders to most international visitors at the end of March due to the corona pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thailand has fared relatively well in the pandemic, going about three months without any new confirmed cases of domestic infections. However, the economic situation is worse. Southeast Asia&#039;s second-largest economy shrank by 12.2 percent in the second quarter, and the crisis is described as the worst in decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After welcoming a record number of foreign tourists last year \u2013 39.8 million \u2013 the hope was to break the 40 million mark. But instead, the central bank expects the country to have welcomed only eight million tourists by the end of the year, due to flight bans and quarantine regulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thailand is desperately trying to find ways to salvage at least some shards of its all-important tourist season. The government has tried to promote domestic tourism through preferential hotel rates, but it is not enough to cover the huge loss of foreign revenue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Previously, there were plans to create so-called travel bubbles with a few selected countries, but that idea was quickly scrapped when the number of corona cases began to increase in Asia again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, they hope to be able to welcome foreign tourists to selected areas in Thailand as early as October \u2013 but they should stay in the country for at least 30 days, according to Yuthasak Supasorn at the tourism authority TAT. The trip begins with a mandatory 14-day quarantine in a hotel and two corona tests before they are allowed to leave the area. And for those who want to travel outside the province, another seven days of quarantine and a third test await before they are allowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Phuket is highlighted as a pilot project in the plan, which is called \u201dsafe and sealed\u201d, and the hope is that tourists will be able to fly there as early as October 1. If it goes well to open there, more destinations could be considered. The plan has been given the green light by the government and the next step is to get approval from the local population. A public hearing will take place in early September, Yuthasak Supasorn tells the media company&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/travel\/article\/thailand-reopening-safe-and-sealed-covid\/index.html\">CNN<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Transport Minister Saksiam Chidchob emphasizes how important it is for Thailand to be cautious and not open its borders without a strategy to keep the virus situation under control. To the news agency\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-08-23\/thailand-seeks-safe-way-of-reopening-borders-to-boost-economy\">Bloomberg<\/a>\u00a0Saksiam says that tourists may probably have to wear bracelets with GPS transmitters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every year, tens of thousands of Swedes travel to Thailand. The country is covered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs&#039; travel advice, which is currently in effect until November 15th - and no trips will be carried out by the organizers Ving or Apollo unless Swedish authorities first give the green light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, Ving hopes that the Thailand trips can be carried out as planned. Their first flight is scheduled to take off at the end of November.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201d&quot;Many who have not been able to travel during the summer have instead booked winter trips, although some have been a little hesitant.
