Train passengers in the EU get better protection against delays and a clear opportunity to bring their bike \u2013 at least if the train is new. Although it could have been even better, critics say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After several years of protracted discussions, the EU Parliament has now finally approved the new rules that have been negotiated with member states since 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Compensation for delayed trains, rules for rebooking, access to ticket information, conditions for the disabled and the possibility of bringing a bicycle are some of the things that are discussed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201dImportant progress in making train travel more comfortable and passenger-friendly,\u201d says the responsible MEP Boguslaw Liberadzki from Poland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But not everyone is equally satisfied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201d"Big steps in the right direction, but unfortunately not as ambitious as it could have been. We really think that further steps could have been taken to give the same rights to train passengers as to air passengers," says Swedish member Emma Wiesner (C) to TT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
My colleague Jakop Dalunde (MP) is also disappointed and speaks of a \u201dmissed opportunity.\u201d For example, train companies are given nine years to make their trips available to independent operators, in the same way that it is possible to book flights today with various online sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
