What we in the industry are doing is to ensure that the LIA internship places that are needed are provided and to collaborate with the Swedish Agency for Vocational Education and Training, MYH, to ensure that the right number of training places are granted. Therefore, we within the Swedish Train Operators Association have entered into an industry agreement with the aim of clarifying our role in helping to solve the shortage of train drivers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now that society is restarting after the pandemic, there is greater demand for transport services such as freight and passenger transport, in some places more than before the pandemic. This places high demands on the entire railway industry to deliver the capacity and quality that customers demand at all levels. For train companies, sufficient access to resources \u2212 one of the most important of which is the availability of train drivers \u2212 is crucial to being able to meet the market&#039;s demand for transport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&quot;It is very important that we address the current shortage of train drivers in the industry. Unfortunately, during the pandemic, our member companies were not able to hire to a greater extent than we did. It is the consequences of this that we need to deal with now,&quot; says Pierre Sandberg, union director at T\u00e5gf\u00f6retagen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Currently, there is a gap between the need and availability of certain key skills, of which train drivers are one such key skill. In their annual analysis, the train companies have identified a need for more training places and the schools have submitted their applications to MYH. It is of utmost importance that MYH grants the train driver training courses that the industry and the school have applied to start. This is to ensure that the train companies can deliver their essential services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Train driver training during the pandemic<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the pandemic, ticket sales fell and many departures were cancelled, linked to a sharp reduction in travel. All of Sweden&#039;s train driver training courses continued to operate despite the capacity to offer train driver trainees LIA internships being reduced due to the risk of infection - which led to difficulties, among other things, for two people to stay in the train driver&#039;s cab - and reduced train traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All train driving schools switched to distance learning, which required a clear structure, including recorded material to supplement the lessons. Many of the train operators, like other companies in the service sector, employed or recruited fewer resources due to the reduced market demand. Despite this, 90 percent of the graduated train driver students were in the right job one year after graduation, according to MYH statistics from 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Train companies collaborate on train driver training<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since 2015, the train companies and train driving schools have been working together on a national training plan for train drivers to ensure the content and quality of the training. The train driver training is a one-year basic training within the framework of YH and after graduation and employment with an operator, the operator-specific training begins. If the train driver then changes companies, the person undergoes new operator-specific training for the current company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since 2017, supply and demand for train drivers and training places have also been compiled to better forecast future resource availability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The vocational school is the foundation for the supply of locomotive drivers, with operator-specific training courses that complement this foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table><tbody><tr><td><strong>Industry agreement regarding internships (LIA) for train driver trainees<\/strong>There is a shortage of train drivers in the industry. The inventory that the industry has made has determined the need for more training places. YH is the basis for the supply of train drivers, with operator-specific training that supplements this basis.
