High inflation and rising mortgage rates are taking a heavy toll on families&#039; finances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201d&quot;Purchasing power has probably never fallen so much in such a short time, that will become clear this summer. Many may have to cancel this year&#039;s holiday abroad,&quot; says Arturo Arques, private economist at Swedbank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, there is a large variation in how the recession affects households. Cohabitants generally have good finances and are in good conditions to own a car, go on vacation and eat out, according to the survey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201d&quot;For single people with children and many young people, however, the situation is significantly tougher. Some in that group risk going backwards every month when housing and necessary expenses are paid,&quot; he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Swedbank&#039;s calculations, single people in tenant-owned apartments in Stockholm and Gothenburg are unable to cover their housing and living expenses. The monthly deficit amounts to between one thousand kronor and almost 5,000 kronor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The calculation is based on a single person living in a 57 square meter condominium and a single person with children living in 75 square meter. The home has been purchased recently and is mortgaged at 75 percent with a mortgage interest rate of 4.2 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many other households are now forced to cut back on their savings and non-essential consumption. This means fewer visits to the pub, cheaper holiday options and reduced everyday luxuries overall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Has the previously strong household savings begun to wane?<br \/><\/strong>\u201d&quot;Many single households and single people in condominiums who have purchased a home in recent years with high mortgages are starting to approach the pain threshold. Some households have already reached the pain threshold,&quot; says Arturo Arques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regionally, there are large differences across the country. In cities with high housing prices, the scope for saving or consuming non-essential living expenses for cohabitants in single-family homes is reduced by between SEK 300 and SEK 1,800 per month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite the electricity subsidy in 2023, the total housing and living costs will increase significantly compared to last year, according to the bank. This year&#039;s income increases will not be enough to cover the cost increases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This should be seen in light of last year, when many households saw their budgets shrink by several thousand Swedish kronor per month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Do you see any bright spots for households in 2023 or 2024?<br \/><\/strong>\u201d&quot;Sure, Sweden has unchanged unemployment, lower inflation and an export industry and a service sector that are doing well.
