And now the history of the area is being further recognised. UNESCO has named the Mourne Gullion Strangford region as a new Global Geopark in the UK \u2013 in tribute to the region\u2019s geological and cultural significance. The Geopark is located in the south-east of Northern Ireland and covers a land area of 1932 km\u00b2. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It consists of an extensive rock and stone landscape created by lava \u2013 formed over millions of years. The geopark offers a variety of activities, hiking trails and places to explore.
