Each region has its own culinary specialty that you should not miss during your next trip to Croatia. For example, you can enjoy delicious desserts such as Orehnja\u010da in Zagreb or the cr\u00e8me br\u00fbl\u00e9e-inspired dessert ro\u017eata in Dubrovnik. But when it comes to main dishes, Croatia is also the place to be, such as the Slavonian \u010cobanac, a delicious spicy stew. Below, we suggest ten traditional dishes for each region that you should taste during your visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Gastronomic diversity in Dubrovnik<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Culinary diversity has existed in Dubrovnik for decades. This unique tradition is still maintained today, and here you can taste culinary heritage from the most diverse regions. In Dubrovnik, you can enjoy ro\u017eata, a dessert similar to the exquisite cr\u00e8me br\u00fbl\u00e9e from France and crema Catalana from Spain. This summer dessert is served cold and is the perfect coolness in the hot climate of Croatia. In addition, this dessert is quick to prepare, as the basic ingredients are milk, eggs and sugar. Rozulin, a liqueur based on Dubrovnik roses, is often added for a special touch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Split and its culinary heritage<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Split is not only a great base for exploring Croatia\u2019s beautiful islands, but it also offers the chance to sample some of the country\u2019s most delicious dishes. For an authentic taste of Dalmatian cuisine, try the round stew \u201dpa\u0161ticada\u201d. This round stew takes several days to prepare, as the meat traditionally has to be cooked in different stages. The origins of pa\u0161ticada are unclear, but the oldest known recipe dates back to the 15th century. Either way, this flavorful dish represents the rich gastronomic heritage of the region and should not be missed during a visit to Split.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Zadar, home of the most famous Croatian cheese<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Say cheese! Pa\u0161ki sir, better known as Pag cheese, is one of the most famous, if not the most famous Croatian delicacy in the world. This culinary delight enchants food lovers wherever it is served. Moreover, the cheese is made in an award-winning dairy that has won awards at various exhibitions in recent years. The cheese can be enjoyed in various ways, for example with homemade pasta, as a filling in pancakes or combined with Pag honey as a delicious dessert. It is no wonder that this is known as the best sheep cheese in the world!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Gastronomic monuments in \u0160ibenik<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The landscape of the \u0160ibenik region is called a unique natural monument where you can admire many beautiful cultural monuments that proudly stand at the top of the UNESCO World Heritage List. The gastronomy of this region is just as special. Pr\u0161utham is the most famous and appreciated cured meat product in Dalmatia, which is traditionally eaten as a starter with homemade bread and cheese. After the meal, you can quench your thirst with two types of wine from the region, namely wine made from the Plavac Mali grape or the Debit grape. In \u0160ibenik, you are in the right place for both food and drink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Unparalleled world cuisine in Central Croatia<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Central Croatia is a region bordered by Hungary to the north, Slovenia to the west and Bosnia and Herzegovina to the east. The geographical coordinates reflect the jumble of culinary influences from these countries to Croatia. Here you have gibanica from Me\u0111imurje, this pastry was created in 1818 in Serbia but has since spread throughout the Balkans. Gibanica is a pastry with no fewer than four fillings: walnuts, apples, poppy seeds and cheese. This cake used to be baked in clay pots and the ingredients <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">was traditionally kept by Croatian housewives in the pantry, especially for holidays and family celebrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zagreb, the epicenter of Croatia&#039;s gastronomic map<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zagreb is the hub of all Croatian regional cuisines and here you can taste many delicacies. Here you will find not one, but two traditional Croatian desserts, namely orehnja\u010da and makovnja\u010da. Orehnja\u010da is made with walnuts, while the main ingredient in makovnja\u010da is poppy seeds. Apart from these two ingredients, the recipe for the pastries remains the same: sugar, cinnamon and milk. These delicacies are traditionally baked for holidays to treat guests to a delicious dessert full of flavors. These pastries are so easy to make that even a beginner cannot fail. Definitely something to try for yourself!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Global culinary phenomena in Istria<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a gastronomic entity, Istria is today a world-class phenomenon. Perched on a hill in the Istrian hinterland is the picturesque village of Motovun, known worldwide for its abundant supply of truffles. Therefore, it is an absolute must to eat on the Fu\u017ei peninsula during your holiday, a traditional pasta with truffles. The pasta is often eaten as a starter to \u017egvacet, a delicious Istrian goulash. Even if you are not a fan of the truffle taste, you can still appreciate these delicacies, so you can even go truffle hunting to find the white and black gold yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sweet delicacies from Kvarner<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you have a sweet tooth, then you absolutely must try Rapska torta during your visit to the island of Rab in the Kvarner region. This dessert was first created in 1117 for Pope Alexander III, especially for the consecration of the Rab Cathedral. The two most important ingredients are almonds and Maraschino liqueur, and the cake is traditionally baked in a spiral shape. The original recipe is known only to a few Rab women, making it a closely guarded secret even today. Rapska torta, or Rab cake, is only served on special festive occasions and is therefore definitely a dessert to try if you get the chance!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The protected indigenous gastronomy of Lika<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Croatia has a number of food products that are protected both nationally and at the European level, and the Lika potato (Li\u010dki krumpir) is one of them. Lika&#039;s cuisine is shaped by its rugged and mountainous terrain and cold winters. Few grains or vegetables can grow here, which is why the region is heavily invested in potato cultivation. Lika potatoes are hollowed-out potato halves stuffed with diced bacon. They are at their best when baked in a bread oven or under a traditional peka. Lika potatoes go particularly well with sour sheep&#039;s milk or a semi-hard cheese locally called \u0161kripavac. You&#039;ve never eaten potatoes like this before!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Slavonia, a region full of tradition and hospitality<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Slavonia tastes of tradition, such as shepherd&#039;s stew \u010cobanac. This dish is cooked slowly in a large pot and was traditionally prepared by shepherds, \u010dobani. The meal consists of different types of meat and a variety of vegetables, such as tomatoes and carrots, which give the dish its beautiful red color. The spiciness of the food is also an important characteristic, which is achieved by both red pepper and dried chili. The stews are usually prepared for groups of at least ten people and are at their best when eaten in good company.
