{"id":242413,"date":"2024-02-23T06:58:00","date_gmt":"2024-02-23T05:58:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.travelreport.se\/?p=242413"},"modified":"2024-02-23T06:58:00","modified_gmt":"2024-02-23T05:58:00","slug":"booking-scam-risks-billion-dollar-fines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.travelreport.se\/en\/bokningsjatte-riskerar-miljardboter\/","title":{"rendered":"Booking giant risks billion-dollar fine"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"396\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelreport.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Skarmavbild-2022-10-20-kl.-06.49.56-e1666241508566.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-240053\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.travelreport.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Skarmavbild-2022-10-20-kl.-06.49.56-e1666241508566.png 450w, https:\/\/www.travelreport.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Skarmavbild-2022-10-20-kl.-06.49.56-e1666241508566-300x264.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hotel and travel booking service Booking may be forced to pay the equivalent of several billion kronor in fines in Spain at the same time as the EU&#039;s new Digital Markets Act (DMA) regulation comes into force next month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2022, the Spanish competition authority CNMC launched an investigation into whether the company was violating competition rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to Booking, the company may now have to pay a fine of SEK 5.4 billion, which would be the largest fine ever demanded by the CNMC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company says in a statement that it is \u201ddisappointed\u201d by the CNMC&#039;s conclusions and \u201dstrongly opposes\u201d them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201d&quot;We plan to appeal this unprecedented decision if it becomes reality.&quot;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The booking giant, which is based in the Netherlands, dominates the online hotel booking market and is a subsidiary of the American Booking Holdings Group.
