{"id":297498,"date":"2024-08-29T06:48:00","date_gmt":"2024-08-29T04:48:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.travelreport.se\/?p=297498"},"modified":"2024-08-29T06:47:22","modified_gmt":"2024-08-29T04:47:22","slug":"survey-shows-environmental-awareness-among-ship-passengers-is-increasing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.travelreport.se\/en\/undersokning-fartygsresenarernas-miljomedvetenhet-okar\/","title":{"rendered":"Survey: Environmental awareness among cruise passengers is increasing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Finnish ship travelers are increasingly environmentally conscious and for the third time in a row have named Viking Line as the most sustainable shipping company in traffic between Finland and Sweden, according to the Laivaliikenne 2024 survey.&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>Viking Line invites its passengers to join the sustainability journey by operating departures on the Turku Line solely with biofuel for a week starting on Baltic Sea Day.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the third time in a row, Finnish ship travelers have named Viking Line as the most sustainable shipping company in traffic between Finland and Sweden. In EPSI Rating&#039;s survey Laivaliikenne 2024*, Viking Line&#039;s sustainability index in traffic between Finland and Sweden this year is 71.5, while the industry average is 70.6. Other shipping companies investigated in the traffic between Finland and Sweden are Silja Line and Finnlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201d&quot;We are constantly developing our operations from a sustainability perspective and it is great that our passengers appreciate this work. As part of our sustainability work, we talk about everything we do, the effects it has and involve customers in our sustainability journey. We also stand out in the survey through our communication regarding sustainability. The success of our communication is also evident from the fact that, according to the survey, our customers are more demanding when it comes to social responsibility and sustainable development than ship passengers on average,&quot; says Viking Line&#039;s Head of Sustainability&nbsp;<strong>Dani Lindberg<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sustainability index in the Laivalikinken 2024 survey measures ship passengers&#039; perceptions of shipping companies&#039; work regarding sustainability and sustainable development. Viking Line receives the highest ratings in traffic between Finland and Sweden in all areas: environmental, economic and social sustainability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201d&quot;We have been pursuing a purposeful sustainability approach since the 1980s and have invested EUR 450 million in our climate-smart ships Viking Glory and Viking Grace. This is a long-term effort that is gradually leading towards the emission-free shipping of the future.&quot;\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The desire to travel increases when there are sustainable alternatives<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finnish travelers&#039; climate and environmental awareness has increased since last year. Of the respondents in the Laivalikinken 2024 survey, 55 percent say they will choose more climate-smart travel methods in the future, compared to 46 percent last year. In 2023, 31 percent of travelers planned to reduce their travel, but this year the figure had dropped to 24 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201d&quot;Consumers&#039; increased expectations encourage us to develop new sustainable products and alternatives for travelers, alongside technical solutions. For example, for a year now, we have offered our customers on the \u00c5bolinjen the opportunity to reduce their own trip&#039;s emissions by 90 percent by choosing biofuel when booking,&quot; says Dani Lindberg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As its latest sustainability initiative, Viking Line will operate the Turku-Stockholm route with biofuel for a week starting on Baltic Sea Day, reducing Viking Glory and Viking Grace&#039;s carbon dioxide emissions by a total of 2,600 tonnes. This amount corresponds to the average annual carbon footprint of 270 Finns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201dThis is a significant step towards emission-free shipping, as regular liner services have never before been operated solely with biofuel. Continuous use of biofuel is currently not possible due to cost and availability reasons, but we hope that this will encourage as many of our cruise, conference and freight customers as possible to choose biofuel for their journeys. In this way, our passengers can make a tangible contribution to reducing emissions while protecting the Baltic Sea, which we all hold dear.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">*EPSI Data Collection Services interviewed approximately 2,000 private customers over the age of 18 who had travelled by ship from or to Finland in the past 12 months for the Laivalikinken 2024 survey.
