Golden sand dunes and lush green oases, underground caves and mountain peaks up to 3,000 meters high, as well as kilometers of beaches and coastlines with dramatic cliffs, all meet here - a true paradise for active travelers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A mirror of the past and present, Muscat stands out with its traditional architecture, beaches and location between the sea and mountains. The capital is also a starting point for excursions to the valleys and fortresses in the area, for example towards Nizwa, along the north coast to Sohar or south to Sur and the mighty dunes of the A&#039;Sharqiyah Sands. Nizwa was the capital of Oman until the 12th century. The city is located an hour and a half drive from Muscat, the country\u2019s current capital, and is easily accessible via a good road. The former capital is a bustling trading post with a long history and tradition, where the sheikhs still play an important role in local life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The large fortress, now a museum, the souk and the weekly Friday livestock market make a visit to this mountain region&#039;s most important city an absolute must. Nature enthusiasts can look forward to hikes through the oasis&#039; palm groves and the lush Falaj Daris Park. Jabal Akhdar \u2013 the \u201dGreen Mountain\u201d \u2013 impresses with terraced farms and rose and fruit orchards on the Saiq Plateau. In April, the roses are harvested here, and the petals are distilled into essences for perfume and sweets. Nearby, Jabal Shams, the \u201dMountain of the Sun,\u201d towers over 3,000 meters and offers spectacular views.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The small mountain villages tell the story of life in the highlands, and hikes provide an opportunity to experience nature up close. A three-hour drive from Muscat brings you to the A&#039;Sharqiyah Desert with its impressive golden dunes. Many desert camps pick up guests from nearby towns like Bidiyah, as driving in the sand can be challenging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Alternatively, you can arrange a meeting point with the camp hosts and from there follow their four-wheel drive vehicle into the endless desert. The 180-kilometer long sand tracks between the desert and the Arabian Sea offer adrenaline-filled tours in off-road vehicles and on quad bikes. \u201dDune bashing\u201d \u2013 driving on sand dunes \u2013 is a popular activity that provides plenty of excitement for experienced off-road drivers. Wadi Bani Khalid is often combined with a trip to the Sharqiyah Sands desert, just an hour&#039;s drive away. The arrival via the steep mountain road is already spectacular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A short walk from the car park follows a canalised stream \u2013 part of Oman\u2019s 2,000-year-old falaj fortification system \u2013 and leads into an oasis straight out of the Arabian Nights. Swimming is permitted in the rock pools, and a dip in the cool water is also popular with locals. The wadi is particularly popular at weekends (Friday and Saturday). Tourist facilities are therefore good: toilets, changing rooms and a restaurant. For those who prefer to stay on land, the easily accessible gorges offer unforgettable walks along the waterways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Al Fahal and Daymaniyat Islands: Marine Nature Reserve<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"552\" height=\"508\" src=\"https:\/\/www.travelreport.se\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Daymaniyat-inseln-kiki-Multem.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-301416\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A little off the beaten track, Oman offers a lesser-known, but no less spectacular, diving area with a rich and diverse underwater world. Just a few kilometres north of Muscat, some of the country&#039;s most beautiful dive sites lie off the uninhabited Daymaniyat Islands. Here, you&#039;ll find a shipwreck you can swim through at a depth of 30 metres, as well as steep reefs with schools of barracuda near Al Fahal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fish-rich sea and the well-preserved seabed provide perfect conditions for a vibrant underwater life and ensure an undisturbed, authentic diving experience. At a depth of 25\u201330 meters, an impressive variety of hard corals awaits, including staghorn corals, salad corals and Acropora banks. The plankton-rich water attracts huge schools of fish. In summer, it is not uncommon to encounter eagle rays, manta rays, lemon and blacktip sharks, dolphins and whales. The nature reserve is also ideal for snorkeling or \u2013 with a respectful distance \u2013 swimming with sea turtles.
