{"id":303959,"date":"2026-06-16T06:29:08","date_gmt":"2026-06-16T04:29:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.travelreport.se\/?p=303959"},"modified":"2026-06-16T08:49:29","modified_gmt":"2026-06-16T06:49:29","slug":"stena-line-cancels-train-traffic-to-germany","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.travelreport.se\/en\/stena-line-sakrar-tagfarjetrafiken-till-tyskland\/","title":{"rendered":"Stena Line secures train ferry traffic to Germany"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Gothenburg-based shipping company Stena Line has secured continued train ferry traffic between Sweden and Germany through an agreement with the Swedish Transport Administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201dThe route has for many years been an important part of exports and imports between one of our most important trading partners, Germany,\u201d comments Elisabeth L\u00f6nne, Commercial Manager at Stena Line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The agreement means that traffic on the Trelleborg\u2013Rostock route can continue until 31 December 2031, according to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.cision.com\/se\/stena-line\/r\/historiskt-avtal-sakrar-fortsatt-tagfarjetrafik-till-tyskland,c4361565\">press release<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is stated to be Sweden's only existing regular train ferry line. No financial details of the agreement are apparent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201dStena Line is very pleased that our assignment on the Trelleborg\u2013Rostock route will now have the conditions to continue. We view our role in the transport system in general, and the vital rail link to the continent that our ferries represent in particular, with pride and great seriousness,\u201d comments Elisabeth L\u00f6nne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>According to the Swedish Transport Administration<\/strong>&nbsp;General Director Roberto Maiorana stated that train ferries have drastically reduced over the past 20 years due to weak economic profitability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201dSince the \u00d6resund Bridge opened, the majority of freight train transport to and from the continent now goes across \u00d6resund rather than by ferry. However, the ferries are still needed, which is why the state is now providing funding through Trafikverket to secure continued services,\u201d says Roberto Maiorana in the press release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since 1998, Stena Line has operated the Trelleborg\u2013Rostock route with two train ferries, M\/S Sk\u00e5ne and M\/S Mecklenburg Vorpommern.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">February\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.di.se\/live\/stena-line-lagger-ned-farjelinje-stora-utmaningar-med-lonsamheten\">announced<\/a>\u00a0Stena Line is to close the ferry route between Halmstad and Gren\u00e5 in Denmark due to a lack of profitability.
