A powerful earthquake measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale has occurred in the Caribbean Sea, just over 200 kilometres north-east of the town of Barra Patuca in Honduras.
A tsunami warning was issued for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands following the earthquake, but the warning could be lifted a couple of hours later.
Witnesses report that the earthquake was also felt in the Honduran capital, Tegucigalpa.
The earthquake occurred at a depth of only 10 kilometres, which may have amplified its effect.
