Austrian former Formula 1 star Niki Lauda is buying the assets of the airline Niki.

Lauda founded the airline in 2003 but sold it to Air Berlin in 2011, which filed for bankruptcy last year.

The deal was completed after Niki Lauda placed his third bid through his company Laudamotion, beating rival Spanish-British bidder IAG/Vueling.

Lufthansa was previously interested in buying Niki and large parts of Air Berlin, but was forced to scrap the plans due to EU competition laws.

There is currently no further information about the deal between Niki Lauda and Air Berlin.
