Up to 50 centimeters of snow is expected to fall in the snowstorm over eastern Hälsingland and Västernorrland.
Schools in several municipalities are closed.
During the late evening and early night, the snowfall and wind increased.
– In Birsta and Nolby (in Sundsvall), we see on the cameras that the snow is moving more "across". On the Höga kusten bridge it is blowing 24–25 meters per second and on the Sundsvall bridge upwards it is 19–20, so it is starting to increase, says Jonny Törnberg, road traffic manager at Vägtrafikledning Nord, to TT at 01.30.
Rural traffic and school buses have been canceled in several of the municipalities expected to be hit hardest by the snowstorm.
Hudiksvall Municipality's crisis organization has gone into emergency mode after a crisis meeting with, among others, the County Administrative Board and the Armed Forces, writes Hela Hälsingland.
SMHI has issued a Class 2 warning for snowfall that will be at its heaviest on Thursday morning and afternoon. A Class 2 warning means very severe weather that may pose a danger to the public.
Pure snow
During Wednesday evening, the snow had some rain along the Hälsinge coast and up towards Medelpad.
– It occurred during the evening, but now the wind is turning from the southeast up to the east and increasing at the same time. Then it will turn into pure snow, says Inga-Lill Nordin, meteorologist at SMHI, just before 1 am.
Strong winds can worsen the situation with drifting snow and poor visibility.
– Along the coast we have strong winds along the coastal strip, otherwise there is a fresh easterly wind. It will snow all Thursday, you just have to prepare for it, she tells TT.
Worst near the coast
Large amounts of snow, 30–50 centimeters, are expected to fall over the eastern parts of Hälsingland and Västernorrland counties, where the situation is at its worst.
The snowfall will continue throughout Thursday while the wind shifts to the northeast, but it will slowly subside during Thursday afternoon and evening.
– It will continue to snow all day Thursday. The morning and forenoon are the worst, then the wind will turn to the northeast and it will continue to snow steadily during the afternoon as well, says Inga-Lill Nordin.
Snow is also expected on Thursday evening, albeit to a lesser extent.
