The expansion will provide space for more play, exhibitions, music, theatre and events, and also means new offices. The investment will improve the experience and attract even more children and adults to get to know the Nordic children's book treasure together. Operations will be open as usual throughout the construction period, which starts in February 2018 and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Junibacken will receive two extensions, one to the south and one to the east. The one to the east will be an extension of the current building and the extension to the south will tie in with Djurgården's maritime history and is inspired by the old wooden fishing huts that were originally located on the site. New indoor space will provide more space for play and theater, educational activities, temporary exhibitions and events. To better utilize Junibacken's fine location in spring and summer, a terrace will be built with a view of the Stockholm inlet. And new staff spaces will provide employees with an improved working environment.
