”We aim to receive 8 million tourists this year with strong booking figures from European customers and other new customers,” says Tourism Minister Salma Loumi.

British tourists, among others, have started to return, which Loumi describes as a good sign.

8 million visitors means a higher level than in 2014, when 7.1 million visited the country. Thereafter, tourism radically decreased to 5.3 million as a result of the attacks targeting tourists in Sousse, where 39 tourists were killed, and against the National Bardo Museum in Tunis with 21 victims in 2015.

Last year too, Tunisia saw an increase in visitor numbers, with Russian and Algerian guests filling the hotel beds, though they are reported to spend less than their European counterparts.
