American giant challenges Norwegian

The airline Norwegian is about to face greater competition on its successful transatlantic routes.

This is clear since American Airlines has now decided to introduce so-called "basic economy" tickets on selected long-haul flights, in an attempt to take on the low-cost carriers that are becoming increasingly common even on long-haul flights.
This is reported by Bloomberg News.

The international version of the bargain tickets will launch in April, American said in a statement on Thursday. Among other things, travelers will have to pay for their first checked bag instead of checking one for free.

The initiative means that American is taking its place in the fight against Europe's leading low-cost carriers, where Norwegian Air Shuttle is growing rapidly with its transatlantic routes.

British Airways, Air France-KLM and Lufthansa are also preparing similar budget offers, according to Bloomberg.
