In 2017, the number of passengers in international traffic at Swedish airports amounted to 30.9 million, evenly distributed between arrivals and departures.

Compared to the previous year, this represents an increase of 8 percent. It was the eighth consecutive year that the number of passengers on international scheduled and/or charter flights increased. This is shown by Trafikanalys' official aviation statistics.

– International air travel remains popular. Flying creates opportunities for tourism and business, but it also has a climate impact, not least on longer trips abroad, says Henrik Petterson, project manager at Trafikaanalys.

Although more passengers overall leads to more air movements, the number of passengers is increasing at a faster rate than the number of aircraft movements. Official statistics show that since 1977, the number of international passengers has increased by 557 percent, while the number of domestic passengers has increased by 285 percent. However, the number of landings in international traffic has only increased by 236 percent and domestic traffic by 60 percent during the same period. The fact that the number of passengers is increasing faster than the number of landings may indicate that aircraft are gaining increasingly greater transport capacity and/or that the cabin factor is increasing.

The cabin factor can be calculated by relating the number of passengers to the number of seats available and indicates the degree to which the available capacity is utilized. Using this measure, the utilization rate for international traffic was 75 percent in 2017, while for domestic traffic it was lower, 64 percent. This can be compared with the global aviation cabin factor of 80 percent in 2016, which has increased continuously over a long period of time.

The data is taken from the table. Aviation 2017. Trafikanalys is the authority responsible for statistics and the Swedish Transport Agency has produced the statistics on behalf of Trafikanalys.

Note: based on the number of arriving and departing passengers in international traffic but the number of departing passengers in domestic traffic to avoid double counting of domestic passengers.
