The total value of all construction projects already underway is estimated at over SEK 350 billion, according to a new report.

Among other things, 146 billion has been spent on infrastructure and transportation, 110 billion on housing and 92 billion on hotels and entertainment projects, according to the report from the consulting firm Construction Intelligence Center.

67 billion will also be spent on expanding Al Maktoum International Airport, just south of the city.

When the expansion is complete, the new airport is expected to be able to handle up to 160 million travelers per year, compared to Dubai International Airport, north of Dubai, which currently handles around 88 million passengers per year.

Authorities expect the projects to create around 300,000 new jobs in the tourism industry alone. It is the first time the World Expo has been held in the Middle East and is also expected to attract up to 300,000 visitors per day when it opens in October 2020.
