About a third of French airline Air France's flights were canceled on Saturday, as a result of a strike by pilots, cabin crew and ground staff.

The staff is demanding a six percent pay increase, while the employer has offered one percent.

The airline warns that each day of strike costs 25 million euros, money that should be used to buy new planes and create jobs. Unions, for their part, say they should receive pay increases, after a pay freeze since 2011, which has allowed the airline to return to profitability.

35 percent of medium-haul flights from the airport to Charles de Gaulle north of Paris are canceled, as are 25 percent of long-haul flights in general, and 30 percent of domestic flights.

If the parties do not reach an agreement, new strikes are expected on April 10, 11, 17, 18, 23 and 24, the airline reports on its website.
