The European air traffic control authority Eurocontrol has issued a warning to airlines to exercise caution in the eastern Mediterranean.

The warning applies for the next 72 hours and concerns possible airstrikes in Syria.
Robots may be launched, which could interfere with navigation equipment, Eurocontrol writes on its website. The authority has not stated where the information comes from, but refers to a document from the European aviation safety agency EASA.

The contents of that document are not known. Air traffic control authorities in the US, UK, France and Germany have previously issued warnings about flying over Syria. Eurocontrol's warning applies over a wider area, not just Syrian airspace.

Several countries, including the United States and France, have recently made more or less open threats to take military action against President Bashar al-Assad's regime following a suspected chemical weapons attack in Douma over the weekend. US President Donald Trump has said the US will respond with a "forceful response".

Meanwhile, the UN Security Council has failed to agree on a resolution containing an investigation into suspected chemical weapons attacks.
