Lava has flowed into inhabited areas after a volcanic eruption in Guatemala.

At least 25 people are dead, and many have been injured.

”"We have injured, burned and dead people," Sergio Cabañas of the country's disaster agency told a local radio station.

According to the authority, 25 people have lost their lives after the volcanic eruption near the Guatemalan capital, writes Reuters.

AP writes that four people died when a house caught fire, and that two children lost their lives while standing on a bridge and watching the eruption.

Ash from Volcán de Fuego, the ”Fire Volcano,” 40 kilometers southwest of the capital, has spread to four of the country’s 22 regions. The volcano is located near the city of Antigua, a popular tourist destination known for its coffee plantations.

Employees and guests at a golf club near Antigua, about 100 people, have been evacuated. A video on social media shows a black ash cloud rising behind the facility.

The volcano is spewing black smoke and ash, and an airport south of Guatemala City has been forced to close while workers work to remove the ash,

A woman with ash all over her body tells local media that lava flowed over the corn fields.

”"Not everyone had time to escape. I think they were buried," she says in a video clip on Diario de Centro América.

Another news site shows steaming lava flowing down a street as rescue workers search for people trapped in their homes. Farmers from the area are seen fleeing, covered in ash. More than 3,000 people have been evacuated.

The eruption is the second major one from the volcano this year. The ”Volcano of Fire,” which rises 3,763 meters above sea level, is one of three active volcanoes in Guatemala. The country is located along a chain of active volcanoes.
