The high-speed trains from Stockholm south will whizz past on the side of Skavsta Airport and Nyköping.
This is the result when the government has now decided where the main track on the new Eastern Link will be laid.
Incomprehensible, says Nyköping's municipal councilor.
The government has today decided on the corridor where the new train route will run – the route that is a first stage in the modernization of the train line between Stockholm and Malmö/Gothenburg. The announcement follows the Swedish Transport Administration's proposal, and it is the authority that will then decide on the detailed planning within the corridor.
The main line will not pass through Skavsta Airport or Nyköping, something that has been discussed and desired by the parties concerned, the municipality and the airport. Instead, branch lines will be built to these locations and connected to the main line, but this will mean longer travel times to, for example, Stockholm than if the main line went directly to Skavsta and Nyköping.
”"This solution both increases the cost and makes things worse," says the chairman of the municipal council in Nyköping, Urban Granström (S), who finds the decision incomprehensible.
The Swedish Transport Administration has pointed out that it would be too crowded on the tracks if Nyköping and Skavsta were also to end up on the main line, but Granström rejects those forecasts.
But according to Environment Minister Karolina Skog (MP), there is flexibility in this decision, no doors will be closed completely and it will be possible to take direct trains between, for example, Skavsta and Stockholm.
”"This track solution opens up several solutions," says Karolina Skog (MP).
In broad terms, the new Eastern Link will follow the E4.
”From an environmental point of view, it is a suitable solution,” says Skog.
Today's announcement is not decisive in itself for whether tracks will be built for the fastest variant of high-speed trains.
”The decision enables both options, we are not locked in,” says Karolina Skog.
She wants to emphasize the importance of expanding the railway.
”"We have a capacity shortage today," it's crowded on the tracks.
The Eastern Link is expected to be completed sometime between 2033 and 2035. The cost is estimated at around SEK 50 billion.
