Rescue efforts to find the more than 40 people missing after the accident continue. 69 passengers have been rescued.

There were an unknown number of vehicles on the ferry when it began to take on water and sink quite close to the coast, and the captain drove it onto a reef to facilitate rescue efforts, authorities said.

Television images on Tuesday showed many people clinging to the ship or floating around in the water wearing life jackets.

Serious boat accidents at sea are not uncommon in Indonesia, where boats are often overcrowded and equipped with too few life jackets.
