Most Swedes want to leave home when it's time for vacation.
Seven out of ten Swedes would prefer to spend a free summer week away from home. 21 percent want to go on a charter trip, 18 percent long for their summer cottage, and 6 percent go hiking or cycling. This is according to a survey commissioned by the insurance company If.
– However, there are big differences between the counties in what is prioritized. Stockholmers absolutely do not want to be at home during a free summer week. Only one in five thinks it is a good idea, while a full half of Blekinge residents, on the contrary, think that being at home is best in the summer, says Caroline Starck, Head of Information at If.
One in four Stockholmers would rather go to a holiday cottage. But Blekinge residents (if they have to leave home) are the most likely of all counties to go out and walk or cycle or hike (12 percent).
In Jönköping County, one in three people choose a lovely charter week, something that only attracts one in ten people from Västerbotten and Värmland – they prefer to stay at home.
Östergötland is the county where the most people want to camp (12 percent). This is nothing for Stockholmers, only ten percent prioritize a tent or caravan for a week of vacation.
But empty villas and homes provide golden opportunities for burglars to roam in peace and quiet, and then break into your home.
However, with a few simple measures you can reduce the risk of an unwelcome visit.
Simple tricks like asking a neighbor to take the mail or put the trash in the bin can go a long way. Leave toys and garden tools out front, and ask someone to move them around occasionally.
– Other good tricks are to leave a low-energy light on, have a small radio on and ask someone to use your parking space, says Caroline Starck.

The survey was conducted by the opinion and market research company YouGov on behalf of the insurance company If. During the period April 23 - May 2, 2018, a total of 3,508 interviews were conducted via the internet with men and women aged 18 and older in Sweden.
