US authorities are considering eliminating certain security checks at small and medium-sized airports.
A proposal that worries terrorism experts.
The US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) was created in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks. The TSA is now evaluating a proposal that would reduce security checks at over 150 US airports for smaller aircraft, CNN reports.
Travelers and their baggage would instead be checked when their flights arrive at major airports.
According to CNN, there are calculations that suggest that this could save $115 million a year. That money could in turn be used to increase security at major airports.
CNN terrorism analyst Paul Cruikshank says that militant groups like al-Qaeda and ISIS still consider aviation a priority target – and that this also applies to smaller planes.
