The fires known as the Mendocino Complex have spread so quickly that they have merged and now constitute the largest wildfire in California's known history, the Calfire agency announced.

So far, the flames have spread over an area of 115,000 hectares, which is equivalent to almost all of Los Angeles.

And the spread continues – the fire is only partially contained by firefighters.

The record for the largest fire in California is less than a year old – the so-called Thomas Fire in late 2017 ravaged over 114,000 hectares.
