No one wants to spend their vacation in the hospital.

But if it does happen, it's good to have thought about it in advance. Here are ten tips on things you can do to prepare yourself.

1. Check what your travel insurance covers.

2. Check that the insurance is sufficient for the entire trip.

3. If you have a pre-existing illness or injury, check if you need a preliminary medical assessment to know what your insurance covers if you need treatment during your trip.

4. Order a European Health Insurance Card if you are traveling within Europe.

5. Check if you need vaccinations.

6. Check when your passport expires and what visa regulations apply.

7. Leave a copy of your travel plans with a family member, friend or colleague.

8. Bring copies of your passport, visa, credit card, insurance card and driver's license.

9. Pack the most important things in your hand luggage, not least any medications.

10. Store important phone numbers in your cell phone for emergencies.
