Just months after Saudi women were granted the right to drive, they may be allowed to step into the cockpit of domestic aircraft.
The airline Flynas has announced that it wants to hire Saudi women as co-pilots and flight attendants. Women have not been officially banned from working in the aviation industry, but so far the airline has only hired foreign women as flight attendants.
In the first 24 hours alone after Flynas announced its plans, thousands of applications were received to become co-pilots. However, it was not clear how long they would need to complete the training. Another local airline, Flyadeal, has also started looking for Saudi women as flight attendants.
Saudi women were granted the right to drive in the strictly controlled kingdom in June of this year, but they still need permission from their fathers or husbands to travel.
