On Saturday, the world's largest aircraft, Stratolaunch, made its maiden flight.

The giant plane has six engines and two fuselages – and a wingspan of a whopping 117 meters.

Tests on the aircraft, developed by the recently deceased Microsoft billionaire Paul Allen, have been conducted on the ground for more than a year.  

But on Saturday it was time for the maiden voyage. 

The plane took off from Mojave Air and Space Port in California and landed as scheduled two and a half hours later, writes the Washington Post.

Will send up satellites

Stratolaunch will be used to send satellites into space. 

The aircraft, which can carry a load of 250 tons, takes off with a rocket under the center wing. 

At high altitude, the rocket is released and continues into space to place satellites in orbit around the Earth.
