A commercial plane had to turn around on the runway to pick up Mexico's environment minister. Now the minister is resigning.

Mexico's Minister of Environment and Natural Resources Josefa González-Blanco Ortiz-Mena submitted her resignation to President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

"She told me very honestly about what had happened and gave me her resignation, and I accepted it," the president said, according to Reuters.

According to Mexico News Daily, the airliner had taxied out and was about to take off when the pilot was instructed to return to the gate to wait for the delayed minister, prompting some passengers to take to social media to express their anger.

According to Reuters, the minister admits in her resignation letter that she caused the delay on a business trip, adding that there is no defense for it.

”No one should have any privileges, and one person's benefits – even if they apply during service – cannot take precedence over the well-being of the majority,” she writes.

This is the second ministerial resignation in Mexico in a week. Previously, Social Security Minister Germán Martínez Cázares, who complained that budget cuts were affecting healthcare for the poor, left his post.
