The United States is tightening sanctions against Cuba by banning group tours to the country, closing the door to one of the main ways for Americans to travel there. It is also banning the export of boats and private aircraft.

”"Cuba continues to play a destabilizing role in the Western Hemisphere, by giving communism a foothold in the region and supporting opponents of the United States in countries like Venezuela and Nicaragua," Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said in a statement.

The ban on group travel is likely to deal a severe blow to American tourism to the country, which has taken off since former President Barack Obama eased sanctions in 2014. Current US President Donald Trump banned individual travel to Cuba after taking office in 2017.

The United States imposed trade sanctions on Cuba in 1960 after the communist revolution in the country.

Cuba is a one-party state with a constitution modeled after the Soviet Union. The Cuban regime is often criticized for human rights violations.
