Are you traveling to the United States and applying for a visa? New requirements will apply from June of this year – requirements that include information about your social media.

Every year, around 14 million people visit the United States. To enter the country, most people need to apply for a visa, which can be done online. Previously, the field with information about your profile on Facebook, for example, was optional to fill out. But as of June this year, the rules regarding visa applications are changing – it will now be mandatory. 

In addition to filling in their first and last names in the application, each person will also need to fill in the usernames they use on their social media, writes Bloomberg News.

In addition to the millions of people who visit the United States, more than 700,000 migrants who seek more permanent residence in the country each year are also affected.

Groups are critical of Trump's decision

The new rules for visa applications to the country will come into effect in June 2019. However, the decision regarding social media names was made by President Donald Trump back in 2017.

Several human rights groups in the US are critical of the proposal that will now come into force. The criticism is that the requirements would lead to an environment that enables profiling and discrimination, the newspaper writes.

There is no information yet on whether the new rules will include all social media or a select few.
