Pilots employed by British Airways have voted to go on strike. If they take the threats seriously, it will be the first pilot strike for the airline since the 1970s, according to the news agency. Bloomberg.

The conflict between the airline and the British Airlines Pilots Association union has its background in the wage cuts that were implemented in connection with the financial crisis to support the financially pressured company.

Previous attempts at mediation have failed and on Monday the unionised pilots at British Airways voted in favour of industrial action by a majority of 93 per cent. There is no date yet for when the strike might break out as British Airways has taken the matter to court to try to put a stop to the plans in the middle of the summer season.

The British airline is not alone in threatening to strike. British and Irish pilots employed by Ryanair will hold a similar vote later this week, according to Bloomberg. Cabin crew at German airline Lufthansa are also considering action in a dispute with their employer.
