The air conditioner must be put aside. Travel at Swedish airports is expected to increase in the coming years, according to the Swedish Transport Agency.
This year, fewer people seem to be choosing to fly in Sweden. 22.5 million travelers are expected to fly from Swedish airports, four percent fewer than last year. The decrease for domestic flights is significant, 8.2 percent, while the decrease for international flights is smaller, 1.9 percent.
But next year things will turn upwards again, the Swedish Transport Agency believes in a recent forecast. And until 2025, an annual average increase in air passengers at Swedish airports is expected of 1.6 percent.
”"The main reason is that there is a lack of alternative means of travel. For many Swedes, international flights are an option," says investigator Jean-Marie Skoglund to Sydsvenskan.
At the same time, the authority emphasizes that there is uncertainty in the report. However, it is not primarily related to increased climate concern, but rather economic factors that affect air travel.
”"The National Institute of Economic Research points to, among other things, the uncertainty surrounding Brexit and how the ongoing trade war may develop. This makes our forecast feel a little more uncertain than usual," says Gunnar Ljungberg, Director of Maritime and Aviation at the Swedish Transport Agency, in a statement.
