Starting in January next year, the airline Norwegian will cease operating the Malmö-Stockholm route, which currently has several departures a week.

The closure of the flight route is due to lack of profitability.

”"We are constantly reviewing our route network to expand and adapt as needed and to know which ones are more profitable than others. If there is not enough profitability, this type of result sometimes occurs," says Charlotte Holmbergh Jacobsson, head of communications at Norwegian, which does not operate any other route from Skåne.

”"However, we have a very strong presence in Copenhagen, which many people from Skåne travel from, and we also have many international routes there."”

What is the reason why the Malmö-Stockholm route is not economically viable?

”"We can only conclude that the Stockholm-Malmö route has not had the desired profitability, and that is why we have made this decision. It is part of the fact that we are simply continuously reviewing our entire line offering with a focus on places where we see greater demand than elsewhere," says Charlotte Holmbergh Jacobsson.

Is the closure possibly related to fewer passengers flying domestically in general?

”"It's clear that it can have an impact. Over time we've seen that interest has slowly waned, but it may have certainly had some impact. Then we're not very big on domestic flights in Sweden compared to our international routes."”

According to Charlotte Holmbergh Jacobsson, Norwegian has no ground staff in Malmö, and the closure will not lead to layoffs among the airline's cabin crew.

”"We don't have a base in Malmö and are only moving our capacity from Malmö to other routes, so our staff are not affected other than that they will be able to fly on other routes instead. Our pilots and cabin crew usually operate many different routes," she says.
