New Zealand police have launched a preliminary investigation into the circumstances that have led to five people being confirmed dead so far after the volcanic eruption on the tourist destination of White Island.

This was stated by Police Chief John Tims at a press conference, where he also said that the eight people who are still missing have probably died.
