Climate change and rising average temperatures are leading to warmer winters. In 50 years, the ski resorts in the southern Swedish mountains will be doomed, says Michael Tjernström, professor of meteorology, to SvD Näringsliv on Monday.
With a three-degree global warming, ski resorts are expected to have problems.
”"Northern Dalarna with towns like Sälen and Idre will have more and more years when there are problems with snow availability," says Michael Tjernström to SvD.
Skistar Swedish operations are located in Sälen, Åre, Vemdalen and Hammarbybacken.
According to Skistar's website, Skistar's largest destination, in terms of number of ski days, Sälen has 89 open slopes out of a total of 101 slopes.
In Vemdalen, 56 out of a total of 58 slopes are open, while the corresponding figures for Åre are 69 out of a total of 88 slopes.
Hammarbybacken has none of its six slopes open for the season.
All of Skistar's Swedish destinations, except for Hammarbybacken, currently have snow conditions of 40 centimeters of snow or more.
