20,000 jobs are at risk of disappearing at British airports, according to the industry organization AOA (Airport Operators Association). The reason is primarily that the number of passengers in the future is expected to be significantly lower than it has been in the past.
”The jobs figure clearly shows that a key part of the infrastructure is on its knees, with no relief in sight,” says AOA CEO Karen Dee.
Much of the aviation industry, both in the UK and around the world, has been shut down during the pandemic and is slowly reopening. One reason is that anyone visiting the UK from abroad must undergo a two-week quarantine, which discourages visits.
The quarantine rule will be reviewed on June 29. It is expected to be replaced by a system where the spread of infection in the country the traveler comes from will determine whether or not they need to be quarantined.
