Losses to the global tourism industry due to the coronavirus could amount to $3.3 trillion in a worst-case scenario, over SEK 30,000 billion.

This was stated by the UN agency for trade and development, UNCTAD, in a report on Wednesday, according to Reuters.

They have published three scenarios with shutdowns of four, eight or twelve months, and in these, revenues would decrease by $1,170 billion, $2,220 billion or $3,300 billion, the latter corresponding to 4.2 percent of global GDP.

The report does not state which is seen as the most likely scenario.

”International tourism has almost completely ceased, and domestic tourism is hampered by lockdown measures imposed in many countries. Although some destinations have slowly begun to reopen, many are afraid of international travel or cannot afford it due to the economic crisis,” the report says.
