The corona pandemic has hit the tourism industry hard. The Stockholm Chamber of Commerce has compiled figures from Statistics Sweden on foreign hotel nights and notes that foreign tourists almost completely disappeared during the second quarter of the year.
The hardest hit is Stockholm County, which lost 89 percent, but Uppsala and Jämtland come close behind with 88 percent. Norrbotten and Örebro counties lost 84 percent of foreign guest nights during the second quarter of the year compared to 2019.
”It’s really just different shades of pitch black when you compare the different counties,” says Stefan Westberg, chief economist at the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce, in a press release. He notes that the loss is not offset by domestic tourism.
