A temperature of 54.4 degrees Celsius has been measured in Death Valley National Park in California, the BBC reports. There is strong evidence that this is the highest temperature ever recorded by humans anywhere in the world.
In 1913, 56.6 degrees was measured in the same national park, but many modern weather experts doubt that measurement.
Similar doubts surround a measurement of 55 degrees in Tunisia in 1931. Measurements from colonial Africa during this time have “serious credibility problems,” weather historian Christopher Burt tells the BBC.
The previously widely accepted heat record – 54 degrees Celsius – was also measured in Death Valley in 2013.
