For those who want to travel this autumn, an uncertain journey awaits, which could ultimately cost a lot. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs still advises against travel to many countries, and this advice means that travel insurance is not valid with all insurance companies.
Gabriella Hallberg, lawyer at the Swedish Consumer Insurance Agency
I think that anyone thinking of traveling should think carefully about the matter and have reasonable expectations for your trip. Because even if the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has lifted the advice to the country you choose, that country has its own rules and guidelines that you must follow. It may be that borders are suddenly closed, quarantine is introduced, swimming pools in an area, for example, may be closed.
It is a great personal responsibility for anyone who wants to go out and travel in the near future. Anyone who needs to be quarantined has no right to extra accommodation.
or a new trip home paid for by their insurance company.
– You are not entitled to compensation for the additional costs you incur because the country you are in quarantines you. You will have to cover the costs yourself in such cases, says Gabriella Hallberg, lawyer at the Swedish Consumer Insurance Agency.
Anyone who has been sick with, for example, COVID-19 must have been completely healthy for three months for the insurance to apply if they become sick again during the trip. In addition, a preliminary medical assessment with your company or the emergency center must be done before the trip.
– You cannot travel with an ongoing illness and believe that you will receive compensation if you become worse during the trip. That is not compensated, says Gabriella Hallberg.
And if you get sick during your trip, it's not just about packing your bag and taking the plane home. Then the insurance company or the emergency center that the insurance company cooperates with must approve the trip. A medical certificate is then required at the destination to be able to be compensated for, for example, lost vacation days or if it is a trip home, then it must be justified from the company's side first, get it confirmed.
You must know exactly what the insurance covers and also keep an eye on what is happening in the country during your trip.
– Things can change from one day to the next. I think you should think about whether you really should go out and travel or if it's not wise to wait until the situation is calmer, says Gabriella.
