Boeing: US aviation authority investigating quality deficiencies

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating quality control deficiencies at Boeing. The case concerns the company's 787 Dreamliner model.

Boeing has reported quality assurance problems at its South Carolina manufacturing facility to the Federal Aviation Administration, the regulatory agency, according to an internal memo. The deficiencies may date back as far as ten years, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Boeing has a longer time has had problems with the 737 Max aircraft model, which is still grounded globally after two fatal crashes. But the new problems instead concern the 787 Dreamliner model, according to a report seen by the Wall Street Journal.

According to the letter, Boeing has informed the regulatory authority that the company has manufactured parts that do not meet normal standards. This may mean that inspections of the Dreamliner must be carried out earlier and more carefully than usual. About 900 of the approximately 1,000 Dreamliners delivered since 2011 may be affected.

According to Boeing, the defects do not pose an immediate safety risk, but in August the company decided to ask affected airlines to ground eight aircraft of the model in question for immediate repairs.
