The International Air Transport Association (IATA), which represents 290 airlines worldwide, estimates that 8,000 jumbo jets could be needed to deliver COVID-19 vaccine doses worldwide. For the industry, this means it is facing the ”mission of the century,” IATA chief Alexandre de Juniac said, Sky News reports.
”Safely delivering COVID-19 vaccines will be the mission of the century for the global air cargo industry. But it will not happen without careful advanced planning and the time for it is now,” said the IATA chief.
Governments are also urged to prepare for the enormous and complex task.
It is still unclear when a vaccine will be ready and how many doses will be needed per person. Several pharmaceutical companies are aiming to have a vaccine ready by the end of the year or early 2021.
