Increasing restrictions in Europe

Approximately one in ten people in the world may have had COVID-19. That is the latest assessment from the WHO. This means that many have not yet had the virus. In Europe, more and more restrictions are now being imposed as the infection increases.

The World Health Organization's emergencies director, Mike Ryan, said today that 90 percent of humanity could still be at risk from the disease, according to estimates. He warned of developments in parts of Europe.

France is introducing more and more measures. In Paris, the alert level is now the highest. Almost every third intensive care bed there is occupied by a Covid patient and the situation has not improved since last week.

New restrictions were announced today, with bars and cafes in the capital closed for two weeks, starting tomorrow. It's tough for everyone involved, admits Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin.

– We are French. We love to drink, to eat, to live, to smile and to kiss each other, he says.

In neighboring Spain, nearly five million people are affected by restrictions imposed in the Madrid area in recent days. It is the hardest-hit area in Europe.

Romania is also one of the worst-affected countries with a weak healthcare system, new restrictions are expected.

In Ireland, a medical expert group is recommending that the country raise restrictions to the highest level and the government is reviewing the rules today. At the same time, concerns are rising in a number of countries about how the economy and jobs will be affected.
