Italy is tightening its national restrictions after a record number of new cases of Covid-19 have been registered in the country.

The new rules come into effect nationwide on Monday and mean that restaurants must finish serving at 6 p.m. and that cinemas, theatres and swimming pools must close.

The action comes despite criticism from regional governments and protests in Naples and other cities against the local curfew that has already been introduced.

Italy has reported over 37,000 coronavirus-related deaths since the virus began to spread.
